The Mudi is truly a rare dog with a seemingly long list of talents.  They have a pleasant disposition and learn very quickly.  The breed originated in Hungary and is a relatively new breed, just gaining recognition in the 1930s.  The breed is known for its versatility as a sheep herder, flock guardian, guard dog, cattle herder, hunter and companion.  They make excellent obedience dogs as well as being very competitive in flyball and agility.  The Mudis’ expressions are that of intelligence and attentiveness.  Females usually range in size from 15 to 17 inches and males 16 to 18.5 inches and are usually between 18 to 29 pounds.

With regards to temperament they are very courageous and powerful.  Within a family unit they usually bond to one person.  The breed likes to be close to its people and is very quiet and low-energy in the house. However, overall they are very high energy so daily exercise is a must.  The breed tends to be quite barky so this must be taken into consideration before adding one to your family.  The Mudi is very wary of strangers and needs to be well socialized as pups.  They will often not go to strangers, but rather will hold back until they are sure the stranger is safe before they approach.  They do not tend to be aggressive but rather need to become accustomed.  They generally love children.  The Mudi responds well to a firm, fair and consistent handler.  They are a highly intelligent and obedient dog.
